IT Support for Perth Law Firms

Client confidentiality is not a policy document - it is whether the systems holding privileged material are actually secure. IT for firms that bill in six-minute units and cannot afford to lose any of them.

Confidentiality-First · Matter-Centric Files · Billable Time Respected

The Stakes Are Different in a Law Firm

Every business worries about a data breach. For a legal practice the exposure is categorically worse: privileged material, trust account details, matters where the mere fact of representation is confidential. The Law Society's guidance, your professional indemnity insurer and your clients' own security questionnaires all now converge on the same expectation - that confidentiality is enforced by systems, not just by ethics.

Legal work also has a shape generic IT setups fight against: everything belongs to a matter. Documents, correspondence, costs agreements and file notes need to live in a matter-centric structure with access controlled by who is actually on the file - including ethical walls when the firm acts against a former client's interests.

And it all has to happen without stealing billable time. Lawyers do not file support tickets at 2pm; they hit problems at 7pm before a filing deadline. Support that understands urgency, discretion and the cost of a lost hour is the actual product here - the technology is just how it is delivered.

Law Firm IT Questions, Answered

What principals and practice managers ask.

What do Law Society and PI insurance expectations mean for our IT?

In practice they translate to a familiar control set: multi-factor authentication, patched and supported systems, tested backups, staff awareness, and the ability to show all of it in writing. The frameworks differ in wording but converge on the Essential Eight baseline. We implement the controls and keep the evidence so the annual questionnaire is an email, not a project.

How should a firm structure its documents?

By matter, with access following the engagement. A well-built SharePoint matter structure gives every file one current home, keeps correspondence and versions together, supports ethical walls when needed, and archives cleanly against retention obligations when the matter closes. Migrating from decades of shared-drive folders is disruptive-sounding and routinely done without losing an hour of practice time.

Can you support our practice management software?

We support the platform layer every practice system depends on - Microsoft 365, devices, network, security - and work directly with your practice software vendor on their layer. What firms actually need is one party who owns the problem when "the system is slow" spans both, and that is the role we take.

What about payment redirection fraud?

Law firms are prime targets because attackers know settlement funds move on emailed instructions. The defence is layered: mail authentication so your domain cannot be spoofed, MFA so mailboxes are not silently compromised, filtering that flags lookalike domains, and - the part technology cannot do - verification procedures for changed payment details, which we help you formalise.

Is our client data confidential with you?

We treat access to firm systems with the discretion the material demands: least-privilege access, documented actions, and confidentiality obligations in our engagement terms. We are also comfortable being scrutinised - firms should ask their IT provider exactly the questions their clients ask them.

Confidential conversation about the practice?

A short call with the principal or practice manager - what you have, what the obligations expect, and what we would do first.
